Proposal: Offline editing for Collie3 open

Summary

Collie should keep working when the network doesn’t. We propose a local-first editing layer so writers can open, edit and comment on any document they have already visited, with changes syncing automatically when the connection returns.

Goals

Open any document you have viewed in the last 30 days with no connection.

Edit and comment offline, with a clear indicator of what has not synced yet.

Non-goals

Offline search across the whole workspace.

Offline sharing changes or publishing.

Proposed approach

Each open document keeps a replica on the device. Concurrent edits merge without a dialog: if two people change the same sentence while one is offline, both changes survive and the merged text is shown on reconnect.

Success metrics

Zero reports of lost edits in the first 60 days.

95% of reconnects sync in under 3 seconds.

Comments, right on the page.

Highlight a sentence and say what you think. The comment stays with those words, and if someone rewrites them later, you can see what changed.

Writing is the one thing a writing tool must never refuse to do.

Love this line. Keep it as the opening.

See everything you still need to answer.

Every comment waiting on you is in one list. Open one, reply, fix the document if you missed something, and tick it off. You never lose your place.

Is p95 the right bar? p99 matters more for someone who just wrote for an hour offline.

Private until you share it.

A new document is just yours. When you’re ready, add the people you want, or your whole team. They can edit or just read, and you can see who has opened it.
